The Libertad coin is a bullion coin that is produced annually by Mexico's Casa de Moneda de México (Casa de Moneda de Mexico, or "Mexican Mint"). The coin's obverse and reverse sides depict a standing winged figure known as the Angel of Independence, which was commissioned in 1910 to commemorate the country's independence.
The coin was first minted in 1982, and since 1995, it has been minted annually with some exceptions. In 1981, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1995, 1996, 2010, 2011, and 2014, the coin was not minted due to a lack of demand. In 2003 and 2009, the coin was minted only as a proof coin. Since 2013, the Libertad has been minted in 1-ounce, 1⁄2-ounce, 1⁄4-ounce, 1/10-ounce, and 1/20-ounce sizes, with 1-ounce and 1⁄2-ounce coins being the most common.
