Competition
The number of competing silver ETF products has increased since 2013, with the number of products increasing from seven products, all based on different underlying indices, to 23 products based on 12 different underlying indices in 2022.
Despite the increased competition, there are only a handful of products that have been in existence for more than five years. Only one product-the iShares Silver Trust (SLV)-has been in existence for more than 10 years.
The iShares Silver Trust (SLV), the SPDR Silver Shares (SLVL), and the iShares Silver Trust (AG) continue to be the largest silver ETFs. These products are based on an index that tracks the prices of silver futures contracts, which are very liquid. They have high daily trading volumes, and their prices tend to generally mirror the prices of silver spot. Most of the products based on futures contracts have slightly higher premiums and significant transaction costs compared to bullion ETFs.
